Mariepskop named after Chief of Mapulana tribe Maripe Mashile who led the mapulana into victory at the battle of Moholoholo ("the very great one") fought in 1864 with the swazi’s. The three roundabels were named after his three "wives," in descending order from right to left, are Maseroto, Mogoladikwe, and Magabolle
Mariepskop is the higest peak in the northern Drakensberg Escarpment. The view is fantastic. Here you can also view the 3 rondabels. Here you are 1,945m above sea level, you can see the Indian Ocean and Maputo on a clear day.
Mariepskop contains well over 2,000 plant species, greater than the whole of Kruger Park and far exceeding Table Mountain's plant . There are over 1,400 floral species. The Klaserie Falls are well worth a visit whilst you are on the mountain. The Falls plummet off the escarpment edge, making a particularly impressive spectacle after the rains. The views to the Lowveld rank as some of the best in the area.
